Big Changes in PTE Scoring – Find Out Now

The PTE Academic exam has recently undergone major updates in its scoring criteria and task contributions. If you're preparing for the PTE, it's essential to understand these changes to maximize your performance and avoid common pitfalls. At Vision Language Experts (VLE), we're here to break it all down for you.

Major Scoring Changes You Should Know

🔹 Read Aloud

Old Scoring: Contributed to both Speaking and Reading
New Scoring: Now contributes only to Speaking

This is a big change. Earlier, Read Aloud played a vital role in boosting your Reading score. Now, it no longer contributes to Reading. This means students must compensate for those marks through other Reading tasks like Reading Fill in the Blanks and Reorders.

 Scoring Parameters for Read Aloud:

  • Pronunciation: Out of 5
  • Fluency: Out of 5
  • Content: No longer scored for reading

🔹 Repeat Sentence

Status: No major changes

  • Still contributes to Speaking and Listening
  • Content, Fluency, and Pronunciation remain the same
  • Typically 10–12 questions

🔹 Describe Image

New Focus: Content is now scored out of 6

  • Emphasis on:
    • Full and accurate descriptions
    • Linking features with relationships
    • Clear mental picture creation
    • Varied expressions and vocabulary

At VLE, we're updating our templates to match these new content parameters while keeping the structure student-friendly.

🔹 Retell Lecture

New Count: Now expect 2–3 questions instead of just 1–2
Content: Scored out of 6

  • Must paraphrase main ideas
  • Use of connective devices
  • Responses must follow a logical sequence

Listening will now gain more weight from this task due to the increased scoring.

🔹 Answer Short Questions

  • You will get 5–6 questions
  • Now contributes only to Listening
  • A good opportunity to boost your Listening score easily

Two New Speaking Tasks Introduced

  1. Summarize Group Discussion
  • 2–3 Questions
  • Contributes to Speaking and Listening
  • Scored out of 6
  • Requires:
    • Paraphrasing different viewpoints
    • Synthesizing perspectives
    • Using varied vocabulary and a clear structure
  1. Respond to a Situation
  • 2–3 Questions
  • Contributes to Speaking Only
  • Focuses on:
    • Handling real-life situations effectively
    • Full context understanding
    • Natural and precise communication

Templates for both tasks are being developed and will be uploaded to the VLE portal soon.

Writing Module Changes

🔹 Summarize Written Text

Now always includes 2 questions
Scoring remains: Reading + Writing
Content Requirements:

  • Full comprehension
  • Effective paraphrasing
  • Logical flow and accurate use of connectors
  • Removal of unnecessary details

🔹 Essay Writing

Big Change: Marked out of 6 (was previously 3)

  • Must fully address the prompt
  • Clear structure, persuasive arguments, and coherence
  • New scoring criteria include:
    • Development, Structure & Coherence: Out of 6
    • Grammar: Out of 2
    • Linguistic Range: Out of 6
    • Vocabulary & Spelling: Out of 2 each

Pearson will introduce human evaluation only when AI cannot confidently evaluate your response. This means using non-generic, well-structured templates is more crucial than ever to avoid being flagged for manual review.

Reading Module Changes

  • Reading Fill in the Blanks (Drop Down):
    • Now affects only Reading, not Writing
    • No partial marking — it's either right or wrong
  • Other Tasks:
    • Multiple Choice (2–3)
    • Reorder Paragraphs (2–3)
    • Reading Fill in the Blanks (4–5)
    • Single Answer (2–3)

Reading is now harder due to the removal of Read Aloud's contribution. Focused comprehension practice is necessary to maintain high scores.

Listening Module Changes

🔹 Summarize Spoken Text

Now only 1 question
Content marked out of 4 instead of 2

  • Full comprehension required
  • Paraphrasing and connector usage emphasized
  • Consistent logical structure

Other Listening tasks remain the same:

  • Fill in the Blanks
  • Highlight Correct Summary
  • Select Missing Word
  • Highlight Incorrect Words (still contributes to Reading too)
  • Write from Dictation
